My favourite picture book: A History of Architecture on the Comparative Method by Sir Bannister Fletcher (1950, 15th Edition)

A History of Architecture on the Comparative Method by Sir Bannister Fletcher (1950, 15th Edition) is a beautifully illustrated book.  It explains the history and evolution of architecture around the world.  I bought this copy for $4.00 at a thrift shop.  I like to dip in and out of this book as there is always something interesting to look at and muse on.

The Weird Book Room

If you love odd books you must visit the Weird Book Room at AbeBooks.com.
http://www.abebooks.com/books/weird/index.shtml

Examples of the weirdness:

How to Start Your Own Country
Erwin S. Strauss

The Who's Who of British Beheadings
Geoffrey Abbott

What's Wrong With My Snake?
John Rossi, Roxanne Rossi

Was Karl Marx a Satanist?
Richard Wurmbrand

All this begs the question: "Why is it so hard for a new authour to actually get published?"

My version of the Top Ten

Another great book orientated web site is from The Guardian newspaper in the UK http://www.guardian.co.uk/books

My favourite part of the site is the Top 10s where authors choose their favourite books on their chosen theme.  You can find it at http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/series/toptens.

Some personal favourites are:

Paul Murray's top 10 wicked clerics

Sam Baker's top 10 literary stepmothers

Matt Rees's top 10 novels set in the Arab world
Adam Leith Gollner's top 10 fruit scenes

The Guardian book podcast is outstanding as well: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/series/books

The best thing about Australia: The First Tuesday Book Club

True, I have not been to Australia.

However, if I did go then it would be to attend this show:

The First Tuesday Book Club
Hosted by Jennifer Byrne
http://www.abc.net.au/tv/firsttuesday/

First Tuesday Book Club is ABC TV's first nationally televised book club. Hosted by Jennifer Byrne it draws on the basic models of national and international book clubs, the series brings to the screen the pleasures that draw millions of clubbers worldwide to these groups with their shared love of reading. It is a nationally televised forum for literary debate and conversation not easily found elsewhere.
The show gathers Australian booklovers together on a monthly basis, a reading shot in the arm on the first Tuesday of each month. Each episode aims to rekindle nostalgic literary favourites and encourage viewers to read books they might not have otherwise read . a spine tingling experience.

Byrne and her co-hosts Marieke Hardy and Jason Steger are some of the most book savvy people on the planet. I love them to the point of distraction!

Of course, most of us cannot attend or watch this television program.  I watch their "vodcast" on my iPod.  It is brilliant!  You can find it at http://www.abc.net.au/tv/firsttuesday/video/podcast.htm.

Also visit the site for the show.  It is full of excellent book chat, ideas, and suggestions.

The reason I love the Nobel Prize for Literature.

I love the Nobel Prize for Literature because they award it, for the most part, to authours who the western world know little or nothing about. For example,

2010
Mario Vargas Llosa
2009
Herta Müller
2008
Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio

A great chance for us in the western world to broaden our horizons and for the winners to publish more widely.  A win-win situation with a sweet tingling sense of justice...

A little about me.

Hi.

My name is Kokeshi and I am addicted to reading.

Books are my true weakness, but I will read almost anything including magazines, audiobooks, e-books, and the odd cereal box.

Last year I managed to read 78 books. I wish I had the time to read more, but I sadly do not.

I belong to two book clubs, one of which I run.

I love my ipod and I listen to podcasts about books everyday.

So, there you have it. Now you know.

I may just be the most boring person in the world...

Perhaps creating this blog will cure me. Either that or it will make me worse.

Here goes nothing...
